FROM Tiny ERP TO ODOO

evalution of odoo

The year 2005 can be considered as an important milestone in the evolution of odoo since it was the year ,a man named Fabien Pinckaers came up with an announcement to the entire enterprise management market that, he is going to change the world of Enterprise Management Market with fully open source software by launching new ERP software named TinyERP. Thus, he always dreamed of leading the enterprise management market with an open source software which led to the birth of baby odoo. An Odoo consultant clearly explains you the evolution of odoo here.

Let us have a look into a small story behind the evolution of odoo:

To make it possible, he started developing the TinyERP product and to enhance the motivation he chose to challenge SAP, the enterprise software giant as the opponent. He also bought a domain name called SorrySAP.com and worked hard for nearly 7 years to deprecate a 77 billion dollars company. Thus, the realization after three years that the name TinyErp was not enough to get attention in competitive market made him to rename TinyERp to OpenERP. Later in 2010 the company evolved developing dozens of modules of OpenERP and was able to afford 100+employees. Since delivering services to customers distracts from building an exceptional product, they chose to switch from software company to a software publisher company which would allow them to invest more efforts in research and development activities.

As a result, they had to find a perfect partner network and maintenance offer which would cost money. Even though fund raising activities become a challenge he somehow managed to find out some partners for maintaining the developed modules so that he can totally get involved in the research process. As a result the next version that is version 8 came up with tremendous add ones like Open source CMS , eCommerce, POS,Marketing apps etc along with that they also launched a new cloud offer where the user can build their own websites without any cost.

Thus, again changed the name into Odoo in the year 2008 which they thought was a name that allows to support their ambitions; building business solutions like CMS,eCommerce,Business Intelligence and all rather than limiting themself to be an ERP software. So the immediate question that arises in our mind is,what does ODOO stand for? It is nothing but the abbreviation ‘On Demand Open Object’. Thus, it is the world-renowned multinational company with 1250 partners all around the world under a single name ODOO. Pretty interesting right? Yes , it is the determination and hardwork that made him to achieve his goal. Thus, that is the journey from TinyERP to ODOO that's from two employees to an MNC.

There were a lot of technical advancement in every version of Odoo. While comparing the two immediate versions one can see that in each and every updated versions, there will be a number of technological improvements .

The versions 1,2,3 and 4 came under the name TinyERP and 5,6,7 and 8 under OpenERP whereas the remaining versions was named under Odoo. Along with the change in names there were a lot of changes in the updates also. For instance we can compare OpenERP version 5 and the latest Odoo version 12. This amazing changes makes evolution of odoo very beautiful.

From the OpenERP V5:

In the OpenERP V5 the main update was the integration with google docs and also with the Social media pages like facebook, twitter,LinkedIn etc. Another add on was the availability of time sheet. A time sheet is nothing but a record which contains the amount of a worker's time spent on each job. Traditionally time sheet was a sheet of paper with the data arranged in tabular format of which the maintaining was a tedious process has changed to a single touch using Open ERP.

Odoo version 12:

Coming to Odoo ver12, it is a bundle of added updates that is highly useful to the users, the main example being the Odoo IOT Box Now everything is in well connection with IOT that is the integral part sensors and all are carrying. Odoo provided a means to connect all your devices to Odoo which is a major advantage in Odoo12. In addition,  there are modules for storing and uploading documents in document management, Multi website support, ODOO Leave Management, Payment Acquirer etc. Another major update is nothing but Odoo chat box which will allow user in automating the replying process through AI.

Open ERP v% is a standard version where as Odoo v12 is available in two editions namely community version and enterprise version.

Database management for both the versions are done using PostgreSQL and scripting language for OpenERP was python2.6 whereas OODO is working o python3.6

On the other hand, OpenERP had limited accounting features with no dashboard and analytics view.but in the case of Odoo12 it supports online accounting and it enables to integrate external accounting softwares in Odoo Erp. It also provides dashboard view and analytic function

OpenErp had limited Application support which was overcame in Odoo12 by improved Application support with high potentiality. OpenERP doesn’t support both Android &IOS apps. On the other hand, Odoo12 supports both Android and IOS apps

When compared to latest versions of Odoo, ERP5 has slower performance and is less productive and also navigation searches require more time. But, i Odoo12, presence of smart buttons, shortcut access, drag and drop buttons helped to increase with its speed rate up to 3X UI.
